What could you say maybe filtered into these new songs in what’s now this packaged deal that we’re getting on Asking For A Ride? And so I imagine your lives have changed a good bit since 2019. It feels like it’s been a really long time.ĬG: Your last record came out when the whole world was different. So we’re really excited to keep it going and to just get back out on the road and do a proper tour. We got to do some of them for the first time last week in Chicago and it went really well. We are always super excited to to bring the new songs out live. ![]() So are you pumped about playing these songs in front of people, getting on the road? But we’re talking during your release week - you’re in New York currently and you’re going to play a show tonight. Are you excited about the new release ? By the time this is out, the record will be out. So before touring, it’s a little bit different a vibe. Asking For A Ride On the Record: A Q&A With White ReaperĬelia Gregory: Good to meet you guys.In the potent half-hour that is Asking For A Ride, the five-piece - also including singer/guitarist Tony Esposito and guitarist Hunter Thompson - funnels its collective punk and metal influences into riff-y, hook-y songs like the aforementioned “Pink Slip,” “Crawlspace” and, my favorite, “Fog Machine.” They embrace synth-driven ’80s rock nostalgia on “Getting In Trouble W/ The Boss,” early 2000s pop-punk on “Thorn” and an almost power ballad drive on “Heaven or Not.”Īs White Reaper prepared to release Asking For A Ride on January 27, and then (beginning this week) to tour, I touched base with Ryan and Sam about this collection of tunes, including “Pages,” the album closer we have been jamming for months now on WNXP. ![]() It is to cheerlead one another - as on the sobriety journeys of brothers Nick (drums) and Sam Wilkerson (bass guitar) - while getting real about the sound they want to cultivate in the studio and then recreate at their high-energy shows. Keys player Ryan Hater told me that they’ve learned optimal collaboration as a band means to “treat everyone like a person” and not just a bandmate slash business partner. The time they took to finalize our #RecordoftheWeek, which they started working on in late 2020, is evidence of that maturation as a functioning unit, going beyond “buzzworthy” band status. One of the first singles released from the long-time-coming 4th LP of Louisville, Kentucky band White Reaper, called Asking For A Ride, was the track “Pink Slip,” which laments: “Hard to believe us when we grow up so slow.” Sure, the eternal youth modeled and perpetuated by a thrashy, bratty, moshy rock band is alluring in even the best of times - and we can all agree the times since their last record, 2019’s You Deserve Love, have been anything but “best.” It would be easy and forgivable to disappear into disassociation, as artists and as fans, refusing to grow up until the world out there seems a little safer to grow up in.īut White Reaper has grown in its decade writing, gigging and recording.

This short-term forecast model relies on weather and environmental conditions specific to the geo-location of the health care institution. For example, a neural network model was developed to predict surges in demand for ED services by patients with chronic pulmonary diseases 8. Few operational support models have been proposed to predict hospitalizations, and most are specific to individual healthcare institutions. For health care institutions, the concern is operational efficiency and the aim is to manage surges in demand by increasing resources, reducing the length of stay or redirecting patients. Managing ACU is important for both health care institutions and patients. The models are then compared using a structured methodology. In this study, we developed insomnia-specific and general patient models to predict ED and IH visits using data from multiple healthcare institutions. ACU is defined as the use of hospital services in the form of emergency department (ED) or inpatient hospital (IH) visits. However, a general patient model that can predict acute care utilization (ACU) may be possible if a pragmatic design methodology is followed. On the other hand, selectively choosing among the available ML models goes against the intended ubiquity promise of digital health.ĭeveloping general patient models to predict the risk for multiple disease conditions is difficult. On the one hand, the large number of chronic diseases and maintenance of associated models is a high burden for the health care institutions. Moreover, when considering the deployment of the models in practice, use of disease-specific models over general ones may require health care institutions to deploy multiple models, one for each disease of interest. Because disease-specific data is limited, especially if it is sourced from a single health care institution, models developed using these small datasets are prone to overfitting, making them unsuitable for unobserved patient populations 4. Using training and validation data from a highly specific cohort of patients may improve model accuracy but it may also reduce generalization to different populations 5. For example, a logistic regression (LR) model was used to predict 90 days readmission after total joint arthroplasty with an area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.65 7.ĭisease-specific models are common, but often not practical. Procedure-specific models tend to focus on post-operative risks. Disease-specific random forest (RF) and convolutional neural network (CNN) models have successfully been developed to detect sleep disorder in asthma patients and achieved accuracies of 0.81 and 0.95, respectively 6. Data modalities ranging from gene expression, signal data from mobile devices, to laboratory and electronic health record (EHR) data have been used in previous studies 4, 5. The sources of the data for these models vary considerably as does the focus on either diseases or procedures. Most ML models in healthcare focus on two main outcomes: chronic disease risk prediction 2 and acute care utilization 3. To successfully translate ML models from research to practice, the constraints and limitations of the models in a production environment must be fully understood. While these ML models show potential in experimental settings, their use in real-world practice is limited. ![]() The fields of neurology, radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesia, intensive care medicine and oncology have all explored ML 1. Interest in machine learning (ML) has significantly increased in the health sector over the past decade. Based on these findings, the proposed evaluation methodologies are recommended to ascertain the utility of disease-specific models in addition to the traditional intra-cohort testing. The results also indicate that using both diagnosis and medications as a source of data does not generally improve model performance and may increase its overhead. Transfer testing between the two cohorts is introduced to demonstrate that an insomnia-specific model is not necessary when predicting future ED visits, but may have merit when predicting IH visits especially for patients with an insomnia diagnosis. Segmentation compares a cohort of insomnia patients to a cohort of general non-insomnia patients under varying age and disease severity criteria. ![]() The data modalities include socio-demographics, diagnosis and medications. In this study, we investigate the practical utility of different data modalities and cohort segmentation strategies when designing models for emergency department (ED) and inpatient hospital (IH) visits. However, they need to be practical to gain wide-adoption. ![]() Machine learning models can help improve health care services. ![]() When his father committed suicide, his mother skipped away to Weimar and re-invented herself as a hostess – the elderly Goethe came to her salons – and as a highly successful writer of sentimental novels. The downside was that his father was a depressive neurotic from a family with mental health problems, married to a woman much younger than him, and of a very different, livelier, disposition. The result was to make him an admirably cosmopolitan figure – he was at heart a European: there was nothing of the German nationalist about him. To prepare him for a mercantile future he was taught modern languages, and he grew up speaking excellent English and French along with his native German. Schopenhauer’s father was a wealthy Danzig merchant, and young Arthur was brought up to follow in his father’s footsteps. Of course, like any philosophy, Schopenhauer’s must in the end stand before the tribunal of truth or falsity – but in the case of Schopenhauer it is also the expression of a particular, individual view of the world, and is throughout impregnated with the difficult, sometimes irascible personality of its author. Schopenhauer too belongs to this select group, and David Cartwright’s new biography of Schopenhauer enables us to better understand his philosophy by better understanding the man. This is not the case with artist-philosophers like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, where there is an intrinsic connection between their life and work. Philosophy Through Personal Historyīecause of its abstract nature, the work of philosophers rarely reflects their life-experience any more than that of scientists. Indeed, for Schopenhauer, Sartre would have been as mistaken in his psychology as was the arch-rationalist Kant. Thus we are not free to choose ourselves, as Sartre would require: we are already what we are. Freedom of the human will is an illusion brought about by the emergence of self-consciousness. And what we are, like all living beings, are so many unwitting expressions of the will that rules us (see panel). Instead, he tells us that our “virtues and vices are inborn” and that it is through what we do that we discover what we are. Though he offers a ‘philosophy of life’, he can scarcely be seen as a forerunner of existentialism, if only because for him a grim determinism rules: we have no space to choose what we are to become. He was writing in the period of German idealism, but although he is indeed an idealist of sorts, it is very much on his own terms, and in many ways he is much more empirically-minded than his contemporaries. Schopenhauer is a figure who rather evades categories. His style is polished and admirably clear – even though he was writing in a period when his fellow German philosophers were producing prose of often impenetrable obscurity (Hegel, for example). It also helps that he is one of the most readable of philosophers. This is not only because he had a high regard for art as offering us temporary relief from the “miserable pressure” of life (of the Will), but also because he offers a philosophy of life, rather than technical treatises, seeing one of the tasks of philosophy as to provide consolation in the face of death, although without what he saw as the falsities of Christianity. Schopenhauer, famous as the arch-pessimist of philosophers, has never been forgotten, but it could be said that his main influence has been outside of philosophy – on composers such as Richard Wagner and on novelists and poets too numerous to mention. If Kant restricted the domain of ethics to rational creatures, Schopenhauer, for whom rationality was only a thin veneer over an essentially animal nature, stressed our mutual capacity for suffering, and in his ethics of compassion gave animals what he thought their due. Not only of humanity, one might add, but also of animals. He regarded optimism as “not merely absurd, but also as a really wicked way of thinking, and as a bitter mockery of the unspeakable suffering of humanity.” ( The World as Will and Idea, 1819). Not surprisingly, Schopenhauer had little regard for Leibniz – “a miserable little candlelight” he called him. I’ve decided to spend my life trying to understand it.” “Life,” he was to declare, “is a wretched business. He became an atheist in his teens, convinced that such a world as this could not have been created by an all-good being. If Leibniz, that great German figure of the Enlightenment, proclaimed that we live in the best of all possible worlds, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) held that we live in one of the worst – one permeated through and through by suffering and death. Schopenhauer Roger Caldwell looks at the most pessimistic of philosophers. But it has at least got the “gambling” part, so that’s promising. Bing hasn’t quite got it, as gambling problems isn’t really the same concept as problem gambling. This is interesting because Google has got the correct translation for the heading – “problem gambling”. But these words can also mean “to gamble” and “gambling” respectively, as in this case.Īnd look what happens when the same paragraph is run through these free online translation engines again but this time with a preceding heading: Original French This arises because the most common meaning of the French verb jouer is “to play” and noun jeu is a “game”. ![]() So here we see the text is actually talking about “gambling”, not “play” and this was missed entirely by Bing and Google, thus giving a false impression of what the text is about and a rather deficient and inaccurate translation of the paragraph. However for some, losing control of their gambling can happen either quickly or over time, without recognising the early warning signs that there may be a problem developing. You would assume the author is talking about play in general, and some problem that may arise from that. The translations have some issues with grammar and awkward wording, but generally you can get the gist. However, some people can quickly (or time) lose control of their game without recognizing the warning signs of warning that a problem is being born. ![]() ![]() Large birds, hornbills need large areas of forest to find enough fruit to sustain themselves. Though hornbills are not closely related to the smaller, similar-looking toucans of South America, they use their long bills in much the same way: to extend their reach as they forage in the forest canopy, primarily for fruit. In most species, these structures-called casques-are light and hollow, their translucence visible when backlit by the sun. The birds are named for the decorative and often colorful projections on their upper bills. Hornbills belong to a family of 57 species that are native to tropical Africa and Southeast Asia. Sadly, I’ve also seen firsthand the threats they face, especially from the loss of their forest habitat. At the same time, I’ve found out quite a bit about the lives of these fascinating creatures. To date, I’ve shot over 300 rolls of film-more than 10,000 photographs-of Asian hornbills. Gradually, I succeeded and expanded my pursuit to more than a dozen hornbill species, not only in Indonesia, but also in Thailand and the Philippines. ![]() Finally, I learned that to photograph hornbills you need to have a lot of patience. I learned how to rig these trees with ropes so I could climb up into the canopy. During that time, I learned how to identify and locate the fruiting trees that hornbills are most likely to return to day after day. Figuring out how to photograph the elusive birds in the wild, within their dense forest canopy habitat, took four years of fieldwork spread out over more than a decade. I thought, “I have to find a way to photograph these birds!”įrom that day on, getting pictures of Borneo’s hornbills, and especially the rhinoceros hornbill, became an obsession. Yet it was so far above me that getting a picture from the ground was impossible. A flash of red meant it was probably a rhinoceros hornbill, one of the most impressive birds on the planet. Looking up, I caught a glimpse of a huge, black, big-beaked bird that landed high in a tree. My first day in the rain forest of Borneo, I heard a loud whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of wing beats above the forest canopy. IT WAS OVER 20 years ago, but I remember as if it were yesterday.
